Area info
Due to its 7 km of golden sandy beaches surrounding the warm, tideless, shallow waters of the Mar Menor, Los Alcazares has become one of the most popular beach resorts with families on the Costa Calida. It is only 6 km from San Javier airport and its central location on the inner coast of the Mar Menor with easy access to the motorway network makes it ideal for exploring the whole Murcia region and beyond.
Through a program of carefully considered low-rise development, Los Alcazares has grown significantly over the past 12 years whilst still managing to retain its traditional small town Spanish charm.
It has 2 distinct areas often described as "The New Town" and "The Old Town." In reality, both offer a mix of old and new properties, seamlessly blending modern facilities with traditional charm.
The original town center of Los Alcazares or 'Old Town' has modern high street shops, small specialty shops, traditional Spanish tapas restaurants and a beautifully picturesque marina.
The more recently developed Los Narejos area or "New Town" was built about 12 years ago to attract tourists and has since been further developed due to the increasing popularity of the resort. Here you will find The 525 square which is a 500 meter long pedestrianized square that leads from the main road N332 at the top right down to the beach at its lower end. The plaza offers a great selection of family friendly bars, stylish shops and modern international restaurants all offering "al alfresco" dining all year round. Its café bars, ice cream parlours, market stalls and street vendors offering handmade gifts, henna tattoos, hair braiding and children's horse riding for hire also make it ideal for a family stroll on a warm summer evening.
The beach has a wide pedestrian street with street lighting that runs a full 7 km from the marina in the old town, to just south of the airport at the northernmost point. This makes it ideal for cycling, jogging or just an evening stroll. There are beautiful, traditional Spanish beachfront properties, sailing clubs, beach bars (Chiriguitos) and the occasional playground dotted along its length. The distinct lack of loud music bars, tacky gift shops or 'handsome, handsome' men means that this beautiful promenade has retained its relaxed family feel which is the main draw for many tourists to this area.
Head further out of town and you'll find an area dedicated to late-night music and disco bars, a modern indoor shopping center with multi-screen cinema and arcade. In addition, the city also hosts summer funfairs, a circus and a night market during July and August. So although it's much lower than some other Spanish resorts and still mainly geared towards families, Los Alcazares still offers plenty to do for all ages.
Property prices in Los Alcazares have started to increase now, which is both due to the resorts increasing in popularity. However, there is still plenty of land available in this area and we are now seeing a number of new, modern, high quality developments being built with both detached villas and apartments available at very good prices.
