Area info
This small, picturesque and historic coastal town has around 24,000 inhabitants and is located directly between the more modern seaside resorts of Benidorm and Calpe. Altea is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful villages on the Costa Blanca. The postcard old town is one of the most photographed on the Alicante coast and has inspired artists and painters for decades.
The Old Town is a maze of whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets, crooked staircases and covered alleys decorated with colorful plants and flowers. Probably the most famous image of Altea is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, a beautiful church whose domes are decorated with typical Levantine blue tiles that can be seen from anywhere in the city.
Its 8 km long coastline is dotted with magnificent sandy beaches and crystal clear waters with hidden coves among the cliffs of the rugged Sierra de Bernia such as Playa de Ronda and Playa Cap Blanc in the city center, Playa L'Olla or Cap Negret further north and the beautiful beaches of Albir and Mascarat just to the south. In addition, Altea is home to Marina Greenwich, the only Yacht Club in the world located directly on the Greenwich Meridian 000º 00 '00'. Altea also has a beautiful fishing port and a beautiful promenade with a large selection of restaurants, bars and ice cream parlours.
It is only 60 km from Alicante and 90 km from Valencia and can be reached by 2 international airports, Valencia (Manises) 150 km and Alicante within 55 km.
